Shocking Animal Facts


  • In 1945, crocodiles killed 980 Japanese soldiers (of 1000 in total) who entered a mangrove swamp to escape the British navy.
  • The killifish lives in temporary ponds in Venezuela. When the ponds dry up, the killifish embryos can survive in the mud, with no water or oxygen, for more than 60 days. No other creature can hold its breath for so long!
  • Polar bears have black skin underneath their white fur.
  • In just over 100 years, the passenger pigeon went from being the most common bird in the world (in 1810) to being extinct (in 1914).
  • The blue whale has the slowest heartbeat of any animal. It only beats four to eight times a minute.
  • A rhino’s rock-solid horn is made of keratin- the same substance as human hair, skin and nail.
  • Cats don’t like walking across the aluminium foil because they hate the sound it makes.
  • Bats always turn left when they come out of a cave.
  • Most hamsters blink with one eye at a time.
  • Elephants are the only animals with four knees.
  • Rodents make up 40% of all mammal species on earth.

  • Tigers have striped skin as well as striped fur.
  • The star-nosed mole can identify, capture and eat its prey in just over a tenth of a second
  • Meat-eating animals won’t eat an animal that has been struck by lightning.
  • Rats can’t be sick. Rats’ poisons kill them effectively because they can’t throw it up.
  • The ostrich has a small brain for its body size, making it one f the most stupid birds.
  • A kangaroo can’t jump unless its tail is touching the ground.
  • Penguins can’t fly bit they can jump nearly 2meters (6 feet) into the air.
  • Moths, butterflies, beetles and mites eat the various algae that grow on a sloth.
